The Digital Transformation of Lab Operations: A New Era for Life Sciences

Oct 2025

Labs across the life sciences industry are at a crossroads. The demand to accelerate discovery, improve data integrity, and boost throughput has never been higher. This pressure is forcing a fundamental shift in how labs operate. What was once a slow, manual process, heavily dependent on spreadsheets, emails, and human error is being reshaped by digital technologies, artificial intelligence (AI), and automation.

However, the journey to a fully digital lab is far from uniform. While some are forging ahead, embracing AI for data management or implementing automation to streamline workflows, others are stuck with disconnected legacy systems. They are unsure how to build a robust foundation for the future.

Our white paper, "The Future of Digital Lab Operations," provides an in-depth look at where the industry is today and where it's headed. It explores how labs are adapting to new challenges, which technologies they are prioritizing, and the hurdles that are still slowing progress.

Lab Operations Transformation: Ambition vs. Reality

One of the most compelling findings from our research is the strong sense of urgency within the industry. A significant 45% of our survey respondents plan to implement advanced technologies within the next two years, despite ongoing financial and capacity constraints.

Yet, this ambition is not matched by current digital maturity. Only 15% of participants reported that their labs are fully digitized, with many still relying on manual workflows for routine tasks. This gap between the desire for innovation and the current state of operations is a central theme of the white paper.

Many respondents see a future where AI analyzes complex results in real time and automation frees up scientists for more strategic work. But for most, the daily reality is a struggle with basic operational challenges. Managing massive data volumes, integrating systems across teams, and tracking inventory and supplies are still major points of friction.

Addressing the Basics

The results highlight that while headlines often focus on cutting-edge tools like robotics and AI, many labs are more concerned with addressing everyday bottlenecks. Foundational lab functions, such as inventory control, top the list of priorities. Without these fundamental systems in place, more advanced technologies struggle to deliver real value. This serves as a critical reminder that digital transformation isn't about chasing the latest trend. It’s about solving tangible, everyday problems in a way that is scalable, sustainable, and truly supports the scientific process.

The Role of AI in Digital Lab Operations

A key insight from the report is the widespread interest in AI. There's an appetite for its potential to enable faster analysis, smarter automation and deeper insights. However, there's also uncertainty about where to start. Nearly a quarter of respondents (24%) believe AI’s most crucial role in the next five years will be managing the growing volume of data from experiments. This demonstrates its essential role in helping labs keep pace with increasingly data-rich environments.

The white paper reveals a wide range of adoption timelines. Some labs are already piloting AI and robotics, while others are still years away from making any significant investment.

Whether your lab is currently experimenting with new digital tools or is still working to eliminate paper-based processes, "The Future of Digital Lab Operations" offers a valuable benchmark. It reveals what your peers are planning, the obstacles they are facing, and the strategies they are using to overcome them. It not only paints a picture of a high-tech future but also lays out the practical steps labs are taking today to get there.
